Online College Degree Programs - The New Way To Get an Education

17
May

Modern technology has done wonders in making our lives easier. In today’s world we have cars that can tell you when you’re lost and keep you from getting lost in the first place, telephones that can dial out just by being asked to, and colleges that you can attend from your home computer because of the advent of distance learning.

Distance learning began in a very non technological way many years ago in the form of correspondence courses. Despite the best efforts of Sally Struthers’ late night infomercials, however, most correspondence schools were not taken seriously and a degree form one of them usually worked against the graduate rather than for her in the job market. You could earn a degree in business management by mail, but you were still going to have trouble getting a job assistant managing a McDonald’s location with a correspondence degree.

Today distance learning has taken on a new and more respectable shape in online education. Offered by many accredited colleges and universities, this method of distance learning can help you earn a degree that is every bit as valued as the one you’d get if you were physically attending courses on the campus of a major university.

Ivy League schools like Harvard and Yale have yet to offer any type of distance learning or online education program, but it wouldn’t be so surprising to see them do so in the coming years. There are a number of notable institutions that have started offering distance learning programs via the internet and the numbers are expected to grow.

According to the listings on the About dot com website, schools that offer online distance learning courses today include Brigham Young University, California State University at Dominguez Hills, Columbia University, the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Texas, Washington State University, Western Illinois University, the University of Maryland, and the University of Louisville. The distance learning programs offered and degrees available through online education or correspondence courses (yes, some do still do it the old fashioned way) vary by school, so it is best to research the school you’re interested in to be sure that the degree you’re interested in offers the program that you are looking for.

In addition to the schools mentioned above, several schools that traditionally specialize in adult education offer distance learning programs. Specifically, DeVry and University of Phoenix were among the first colleges to offer degrees online.
